Ngorongoro Crater is the extinct volcanic Caldera that is located in Northern Tanzania. It is one of the most highly visited attractions in Africa with around 450,000 people traveling to this place every year.

The Ngorongoro Crater was once a gigantic volcano. After the volcanic eruption, the lava collapsed on itself resulting in the formation of a Caldera. This event was believed to take place around 2 and a half million years ago.
The size of the volcano was believed to be similar to that of Mount Kilimanjaro. The original height of the volcano was 4500 to 5800 meters. Now, the size of the crater is about 610 meters deep covering an area of 260km2.
There are two other regions in the Ngorongoro Crater namely Olmoti and Empakai. All are enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
The Crater area holds historic significance. Olduvai Gorge located in the crater was a major archaeological discovery area. The fossils recovered from here showed the evidence of human species and evolution.
The Crater is home to around 40,000 people who share the space with a remarkable number of wildlife. The crater shelters around 30,000 animals ranging from leopard, cheetah hyena, warthog, buffalo, and impala.
